Course content

This course is designed to meet the needs of students in diverse disciplines and to provide them with the skills necessary to: (a) actively participate in seminar discussions, (b) present their arguments in a convincing manner, and (c) participate in international conferences and other events. In this course we will review, inter alia the linking devices, organisational patterns and communicative strategies needed in order to attract the audience’s attention and to convey the message effectively. Each participant will give an oral presentation on a topic within their field of study.

Learning outcomes:

• Identify stylistic and structural conventions of academic speaking in English;
• Recognise and apply effective communicative strategies for public speaking;
• Produce a coherent and well-structured academic oral presentation in English.

Course literature: All materials will be provided at the start of the course.

Special eligibility criteria: English B/6 or equivalent.

This course does not fulfill the requirements for admission to higher levels.
