Magnus Ljung received his university education at Göteborg University and to some extent at the University of Wales, Bangor. In 1963-64 he studied Linguistics at the University of California, Berkeley as a Fulbright grantee. He defended his PhD thesis English Denominal Adjectives at Göteborg in 1970 and was Docent in English at Göteborg university between 1970 and 1977. He spent the academic year 1977/78 as American Council of Learned Societies Scholar at the University of Texas, Austin. In 1978 he became Professor of English Language at Stockholm University and remained as professor there until his retirement in the year 2000. He was Head of Department for 14 years and has also been visiting professor at the Universities of Vienna and of Zurich.

Magnus Ljung has also been external examiner for the University of Surrey and advisory editor for Cambridge University Press.

He is currently involved in research on discourse functions of emotive language in English and other languages.
